ABOUT IFME RESEARCHES IN THE BLACK SEA

This year, within the implementation of the research work on stock assessment of marine bioresources in the Azov-Black Sea basin, IFME has conducted trawl surveys and coastal research fishing in the Black Sea.

In particular, stock estimation with use of variable-depth trawl on the large water area in the northwestern part of the Black Sea, which belongs to the Ukrainian continental shelf zone, was carried out in September. At present, the Ukrainian science has no research vessel with modern acoustic equipment, allowing to conduct sonar records of mass fish in the pelagic zone of the marine body, however, trawl account is also widely used and recognized by international fisheries organizations.

Taking ino account that the similar research expeditions on the shelf of the Black Sea were not carried out by Ukraine for many years, the value of obtaining fresh biological data cannot be overstated.

About 20 fish specied were registered in this survey.

The domination species in this area, by result of the survey, is sprat (Sprattus sprattus ). The proportion of whiting (Merlangius euxinus), as the second commercial object by frequency of occurrence, should not exceed 10% in catches.

In smaller quantities but also often were been caught anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), horse mackerel (Trachurus ponticus) and red mullet (Mullus ponticus).

From the other species have been sighted also species of families: Mugilidae, Clupeidae, Gobiidae, Acipenseridae, Pleuronectidae, Dasyatidae, Rajidae etc.

Permanent escort almost everywhere following the research vessel were dolphins and waterfowl.

IFME expresses gratitude to the fish companies "Liman" (Illichivsk) and "Svyatogo Nikolaya" (Kherson) which provided vessels for realization of this scientific researches, as well as thanks to the crew of fishing vessels SCHS1025 and Rybak Khersona for the friendly and quality technical support for the success of the scientific work.
